KATIE HOBBS
Born, raised, and educated in Arizona, Katie Hobbs grew up in a middle-class family that sometimes relied on food stamps.
She paid for her college education through scholarships and work-study, and is an avid cyclist and triathlon competitor.
Prior to entering politics, Katie worked for one of the nation's largest domestic violence centers, an experience she credits as a primary inspiration for running for office.
Motivated by a desire to advocate for vulnerable communities at a policy level, she was elected to the Arizona State Legislature in 2011, where she served until 2019. That same year, she was elected Arizona's Secretary of State, a role in which she became a nationally recognized defender of election integrity during one of the most turbulent periods in American electoral history.
In 2022, Katie ran for Governor of Arizona and narrowly won, becoming the state's first Democratic governor in over a decade. After days of ballot counting, she defeated a Republican — an election-denying candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump — in a race that drew national attention.
She was inaugurated in January 2023, making history as the first social worker ever to serve as a governor in the United States.
As Governor, Katie she prioritized expanding access to affordable housing, protecting reproductive rights following the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade, and investing in Arizona's public education system.
She has been a consistent voice for working families, drawing on her own lived experience of economic hardship to shape policies that reflect the realities of everyday Arizonans.
Her tenure has also been marked by a commitment to bipartisan governance in a deeply divided political landscape.
